It was only when she cleaned Sailor when Kendra realized that the gelding had thrown a shoe. They had enjoyed their Fall trail ride, attempting to ride outside as much as they could before the change of seasons. She let out a sigh, it happened to every rider eventually.
The blonde finished dealing with Sailor, putting him back outside in the gelding's pasture before she headed on foot. She sent Chase a text, asking if he had time to put it back on as she continued on. Not knowing exactly where the liver chestnut lost his shoe made things difficult. The last thing she wanted though was to have an animal or another human step on it by accident and hurt themselves. The leaves crunched under her riding boots at the trail head and very quickly a silver object caught her eye. She headed over and picked it up off the ground. It was just a coin, which she stuck in her back pocket.
As she continued along, she heard a branch crunch behind her. The blonde turned around, wildly glancing to see where her company was coming from. "Hello? Anyone there?" The trails were usually quiet in the mornings, but Kendra was always careful wherever she went.
his was the one thing that Zayn Blake absolutely hated about being a street kid and going on his own: the lack of money. He had actually tried to get himself a job until too many questions came up. The big one: where do you live, since apparently, an address is needed for a paycheck, which he can't give, since the teenager lived in a broken down voltswagon bus near the beach. Unfortunately though, Zayn still needed money, and if there was one thing he was good at, it was pickpocketing.
It was sorta sad to think about it, but he told himself it was better than the methods that the Hickstead gang participated in: armed robbery. No, him snatching a wallet wasn't going to kill anyone, only cause them the annoyance of replacing credit cards and ID's, which was silly really, given that Zayn only ever needed the cash. What did feel dumb though, was the fact the fact that he was stalking the trails. The young male didn't care for pickpocketing out here, it was too open and there wasn't enough crowds to blend into, only the trees, but he had no choice. Hickstead Police seemed to be patrolling a bit more in town lately, probably because Fall brought tourists, the best kind of target, and unfortunately, he had too close of a call last time.
Movement caught his eye though now, as she saw a woman walking through the trails now, looking for something. Deep brown eyes caught what it was: a horse shoe. Perfect. She'd already be distracted. He readied himself, bracing for the thrill as she bent over to pick it up. A stupid deer snapped some of the branches, causing the woman to snap up now but Zayn was already committed as he darted forward now, swift as said deer and sly as the fox. Unfortunately though, the woman appeared to have a sixth sense as he felt fingers, and quite strong fingers, clamp down on his wrists just as he managed to get a hold of her wallet, "Uh...good morning...fine day for a walk, right?" He said nervously, but in the back of his mind, Zayn knew he was good as dead.
It was almost as if her police instincts kicked in. Her hand was around the perp's wrist before standing up and turning around - causing the wrist to twist. Her intent was not to break it, but to cause some pain. "Give me my wallet back, then we can talk." The horse shoe in her other hand dropped on the ground with a light thud. Right now she was more focused on her safety.
She glanced at the person now. He seemed younger than what she expected. The dark eyes and longer shaggy hair made her wonder if he looked familiar to her. The blonde kept calm before her next comment. "Or are you going to tell me that grabbing my wallet was by pure accident?" She was using her bad cop voice now. The teen didn't seem to have weapons, but he needed to be respectful of her.
Kendra slightly loosened her grip on his wrist once it started to turn white. Her team would be proud of her - using her self defense skills away from work.
ayn knew he had been a dead man, but he may have just handed this woman the shovel to dig his grave with by the way she snapped at his wrist. It was fast - like a reflex, and suddenly, the teenager had his defenses up as well. He wasn't going to be dumb and fight her, that was a whole other ball park that he didn't want to bark up, but there was just something about her that screamed 'cop'. Had he bee that dumb? The horse shoe dropped with a thud, her gaze looked really steely as she stared at him, now using a voice that most definingly sounded cop-like: "Damn lady, are you a cop?"
Might as well figure that one out right now because it's not like he had a parent to bail him out, and Dodger, well, his big brother didn't even know he was in town. Zayn didn't care for him to find out either, he idolized his brother, and the last thing he wanted him to find out that he was a dumb ass...okay, well, more than a dumbass he had been since leaving. Dodger though was the least of his problems - this chick was, er, lady, and he had to figure out how to charm her pants off. "Honestly, it did look like it was going to fall out. I was merely making sure you didn't loose it also like you did that lucky horse shoe," Zayn cracked a smile now, "I'm Zayn by the way. You know, if you are a cop, you're pretty fine. Usually I feel like they're all fat and such."
Kendra could feel the grip loosen from the perp - it seemed as if he was starting to back off. She was trained not to be stupid or naïve in situations like these - there were thieves even in a small town like Hickstead. She wasn't someone who was constantly paranoid, though she knew what sounds to look out for - especially when she was alone.
"What made you guess that?" She didn't really think that giving her profession away. There were more and more females who were taking self defense classes - mostly for those just in case situations. "That's an odd way to explain what you were really doing. I am good at keeping my eye on my own things. I'd just like to let you know it's not respectful to sneak up on someone like that." There went her motherly tone - which often leaked into her police officer voice too. It was finally getting easier to use a softer tone, including when she got mad at her own daughter.
"Hasn't anyone ever told you that?" She wondered how this teen grew up - most people found it was common sense to make it known that someone was approaching you. Or at least if the intentions were pure. "Actually, it's my horse that threw the shoe. I don't think it's lucky. You don't ride do you?" The blonde didn't recognize him - as a police officer she did try her best to recognize people she often came in contact with.
Kendra laughed, this wasn't the first time she had been flattered. "I'll have you know the police officers aren't all fat and lazy." Just the ones that were getting up there in age, but they still had yearly fitness tests to pass. "Zayn? Is that some sort of nickname? I'm Kendra." She nodded before picking up her horse shoe and putting it in the pocket of her jacket.
